110 Underprivileged Children Receive Safety Training, Helmets and a Cool Ride

HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- At two holiday events hosted today by Calpine Corporation's (NYS: CPN) MS 150 cycling team and fellow employee volunteers, 110 underprivileged children served by five local organizations learned how to be safe while riding brand new bicycles.

Sixty bikes and helmets went to 30 boys and 30 girls ages 8-10 served by four Houston-area Boys and Girls Clubs:

  • The John and Cissy Havard Boys and Girls Club on Airline Drive

  • The Jim and Barbara Morefield Boys and Girls Club on Selinsky Street

  • The NFL YET at James Driver Park Boys and Girls Club on Bentley Street

  • The Holthouse Boys and Girls Club on Canal Street

Another 50 bikes and helmets went to boys ages 10-12 who play with the Lindale Little League. The league plays at Moody Park, which Calpine has adopted as part of its Community Leaders program partnership with the Houston Astros and the City of Houston. Over the next five years, Calpine will sponsor the redevelopment of the youth softball and baseball fields at Moody Park. Employees will have the opportunity to volunteer as coaches or mentors and to provide wellness and educational programs for the park's patrons. Employees will work alongside wounded veterans, who will be hired by the Astros to serve as field managers.

"Our employees found this project very exciting because it combined three things we are passionate about - safety, wellness and community service. The Calpine MS-150 team members and their co-workers donated the funds to purchase the bikes and helmets, and they volunteered for an entire day to assemble all 110 bikes," said Thad Hill, Calpine's Chief Operating Officer and a national trustee of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America. "We are thankful to all of our partners in this project for their great work year round to help children in our community, and to the DPS for providing hands-on safety training for these youngsters."

"I and my fellow directors from the other Houston-area Boys and Girls Clubs selected children who make good grades, have great attendance records in the Club programs they participate in and are good role models for their peers," said Carlos Lozano, Director of the Havard Club. "This generous donation from Calpine employees will help brighten their holidays and help them learn that they can reap rewards form hard work and dedication."

"With this project, Calpine is demonstrating how the Astros Community Partners program goes above and beyond refurbishing youth baseball and softball fields," said Matt Brand, Vice President of Corporate Partnerships with the Astros. "Calpine employees are engaging in a personal and meaningful opportunity to help the children who will be playing ball on the refurbished fields at Moody Park."

About Calpine

Calpine Corporation is the largest independent power producer in the U.S., with a fleet of 94 power generation plants representing nearly 29,000 megawatts of generation capacity. Last year our plants generated more than 94 million megawatt hours of power for our wholesale customers in 20 states and Canada. Our 92 operating plants as well as two under construction consist primarily of natural gas-fired and renewable geothermal power plants that use advanced technologies to generate power in a low-carbon and environmentally responsible manner. Our modern, clean, efficient and cost-effective fleet stands ready to respond to the increased need for cleaner and more affordable power as the economy recovers, as new environmental rules are implemented and force older, dirtier plants to retire or reduce generation, as variable renewable power generation from wind and solar grows and with it the need for flexible natural gas generation to assure firm supply to the grid, and finally, as natural gas becomes economically competitive with coal as a fuel for power generation.
