City of Richardson Deploys Alvarion®Wireless Broadband Solution for Smart City Network

Local government aims to enhance public safety and optimize traffic flow throughout the city with high-speed wireless network and video surveillance

TEL AVIV, Israel--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Alvarion Ltd. (NAS: ALVR) , a global provider of optimized wireless broadband solutions addressing the connectivity, coverage and capacity challenges of public and private networks, today announced the deployment of a wireless municipal network with the City of Richardson, Texas. The City deployed an Alvarion Smart City solution in the 4.9 GHz licensed public safety frequency that will improve the quality of life for residents and for the huge number of commuters that enter the nation's Telecom Corridor daily. Alvarion's BreezeMAX® Extreme solution was selected for its unmatched reliability and operational efficiency demonstrated throughout the City's proof of concept process.

"During our requisite proof of concept process we were originally looking at various mesh solutions. We quickly realized that the only equipment that offered us the non-stop reliability we require is the BreezeMAX Extreme and so we went for an end-to-end Alvarion wireless broadband network," commented Steve Graves, Chief Information Officer with the City of Richardson. "We are very excited about this project and more so to be going ahead with an Alvarion solution that is founded on solid technologies working together to meet our ongoing needs and budgetary constraints."

The Alvarion Smart City solution provides connectivity to the City's high-quality video surveillance network that delivers live feeds to police headquarters and to a 24-7 Emergency Operations Center. The high-quality feeds can also be viewed from any PC monitor within the public safety network. The network also supports the City's public safety radio applications. Alvarion's BreezeMAX Extreme base stations have been deployed on various water towers and tall buildings across the city to enable ubiquitous coverage.

With more than 5,000 businesses operating within Richardson's 28 square miles (73 km2), including several of the world's largest telecommunications/networking companies, traffic has become a major priority for local government. Inspired by Kansas' Operation Green Light, City of Richardson officials have decided to introduce a wireless traffic digitalization system that will improve traffic flow into and throughout the city. The resulting improvement in coordination of traffic signals and incident response, will gradually increase regional air quality, provide a tool for local government to better manage changes in traffic and essentially improve the overall quality of life for residents and commuters.

"Cities all over the world are turning to wireless broadband to make their cities smarter, safer and more competitive," said Udi Ben David, General Manager Americas, Alvarion. "We are pleased to be an active enabler of this smart city project in Richardson, and with our field-proven product portfolio and extensive experience, will continue to help cities meet their growing challenges in serving their residents and improving their quality of life."

The City of Richardson's intelligent transport system (ITS) supports various applications including: intersection controller data, GPS Time/NTP Time sync, traffic video surveillance, traffic counting equipment and remote viewing of traffic video detectors. In addition, the network provides hotspot backhauls.

Alvarion partner, Crystal Communications, is enabling the City to roll out a wireless, high-speed communications network including base station equipment, network planning and optimization, the AlvariSTAR Network Management System, CPEs connected to the traffic controllers and more.
