Strayer University Teams Up with the Washington Redskins to Provide a Personal Finance Playbook

Redskins Players Learn the Importance of Financial Planning and How to Prepare for Long-Term Success

WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Strayer University announced today that it will partner with the Washington Redskins to offer a three-part financial planning series for players and their families. The Strayer University course developed specifically for professional athletes, "Your Financial Playbook," teaches NFL players the importance of long-term financial planning and how to manage personal finances. The course addresses the unique pressures that professional athletes face to protect, invest and manage career earnings during their time in the NFL and in retirement.

"I personally know the importance of understanding financial commitments and how just one mistake can have a lasting impact on you and your family," said Joe Gibbs, former Redskins coach, Hall of Fame member and founder of Joe Gibbs Racing. "I learned a lot from my mistakes, but I also witnessed how many players struggled with finances over the years. I am excited to work with Strayer to provide these players the opportunity to gain a better understanding of their finances and how to avoid many of the common mistakes. I appreciate Dan Snyder and Coach Shanahan allowing us to provide these classes to the Redskins players."

Strayer University is teaming with Gibbs to bring the financial management course to both new and seasoned players. Gibbs will kick off the program by sharing his personal experience with financial hardship and will describe how clear and focused planning can assist professional athletes in preparing for long-term financial security. During the three-part series, Strayer University financial experts will provide information ranging from the psychology of money to managing large purchases, building and protecting wealth, and working with trusted advisors to set and meet financial goals.

"Playing professional football is a dream come true for me," said Lorenzo Alexander, Redskins linebacker and program participant. "With that dream comes a lot of responsibility and requests. With three young daughters, it is especially important that my wife and I plan for our future. Having a better understanding of how to plan, budget and invest will help give my family greater financial security today and tomorrow."

Studies show that approximately 78 percent of NFL players who have been retired for two years or more are either bankrupt or under financial stress. Pressures such as large requests from family members and acquaintances, bad investments, and poor spending habits can lead to serious financial distress.

"The coursework is designed by Strayer University professors and financial experts to provide participants with an overview of personal wealth management and in-depth information on the skills they will need to build and preserve a successful financial future that goes long beyond their football careers."

The financial management series will take place Dec. 10, Dec. 11 and Dec. 17 at Redskins Park, the training facility and year-round headquarters for the Redskins, in Ashburn, Va.
