Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles Wins Davey Award with "Save Time, Renew Online" Campaign

DENVER--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- The Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV), Donor Alliance and Colorado.gov announced today that their joint "Save Time, Renew Online" multimedia campaign has been selected by The International Academy of Visual Arts to receive a 2012 Davey Award. The campaign was developed to educate Coloradans about the ability to renew their driver's licenses online and register to be organ, eye and tissue donors at the same time.

The campaign is led by the fictional character Guy VROOM, a comical, mullet-wearing "dude" stuck in the '80s. The joke being that Guy VROOM looks and talks that way because he renews his license online and skips the lines at the DMV, and therefore is able to keep using his old photo, circa 1985. The Save Time, Renew Online campaign was introduced to Coloradans in 2011 with a direct mail campaign, a public service announcement featuring Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper and Guy VROOM, social media activities and DMV posters. In 2012 the campaign continued with direct mail, advertising outreach and social media and PR efforts.

The campaign wrapped up 2012 with participation in the annual Parade of Lights, a favorite holiday tradition in Denver. Guy VROOM helped to escort Donate Life Colorado's "Gift of Life" balloon in the parade, and continued to promote his message of renewing driver's licenses online and saying "YES" to the gift of life at the same time.

"We are very proud to report an increased percentage of donor registrations online over the Driver's License Office as a result of this creative online campaign, which was our impetus for participating," said Sue Dunn, president and CEO of Donor Alliance, the nonprofit organ procurement organization serving Colorado. "This accomplishment will directly translate to more gifts of life being available to patients in need, which is a tremendous achievement."

The response to the "Save Time, Renew Online" has been overwhelmingly positive. Of the approximately 250,000 Coloradans eligible to renew online in 2012, 167,000 elected to do so. In addition, 73 percent of those that renewed online elected to become donors, which is a 6 percent higher rate over DMV office renewals.
