DeNA goes hardcore with The Drowning early next year

Updated

While many mobile gamers might hear the names Mobage or DeNA and think of the pair's many trading card games that have been released recently on iOS and Android, DeNA has today announced something entirely different. The Drowning is DeNA and Scattered Entertainment's first attempt at a free-to-play 3D game world combined with first person shooter gameplay.

Based in an alternate version of reality and centered around the apocalypse, The Drowning sees the world taken over by monsters and a black oil flood of sorts that has transformed ordinarily tame animals and humans into beasts. The game will be played as a survivor of the apocalypse who is challenged to survive in a world gone mad, and while other details concerning the game's storyline are still under wraps, this is obviously a game not meant for the kiddies.

"Scattered Entertainment's vision is to bring the type of deep, high-quality and immersive games normally only experienced on PC and consoles, to the convenient, powerful modern mobile device," said Ben Cousins, general manager of Scattered Entertainment and head of DeNA's European studio operations, via a company release. "The Drowning combines the play-patterns and touch-screen specific control systems expected of tablet and smartphone games with unmatched console-quality graphics, innovative skill-based gameplay and a rich, expansive fictional world."

After watching the trailer below, our hopes are high for The Drowning, which is set to launch for free on both iPhone and iPad in early 2013. Whether or the not the game can live up to its exciting announcement trailer remains to be seen, but we'll make sure to bring you more about the game as details become available.
