Facebook's top social games of 2012 include SongPop, FarmVille 2 et al

The end of 2012 nears, and with it comes year-end lists. (Of course, we're in on the fun, too.) Facebook has just issued its own list for social games, aptly named the Top Rated Social Games of 2012, which points out SongPop by FreshPlanet as the "crowd favorite" with the highest rating based on Facebook's star system through its App Center.

Following SongPop are Dragon City by Social Point and Top Free Games's Bike Race in second and third place, respectively. Zynga unsurprisingly is prominently featured on the list, with FarmVille 2, Draw Something, Scramble With Friends, ChefVille and more making the cut. What's more interesting about this list, as Facebook points out, is that the majority of the top-rated social games were created outside of the U.S., including Angry Birds Friends by Rovio, Candy Crush Saga by King.com and more.

Another encouraging fact is that this list features a refreshingly healthy amount of "hardcore" social games, like Marvel: Avengers Alliance by Playdom and Rebel Entertainment's Dungeon Rampage among others. As you can already likely deduce, this list includes both games on Facebook and those on mobile that use Facebook Connect. That said, 56 percent of the top-rated games are available on Facebook, with the remaining on mobile.

While Zynga clearly has the most top-rated games on this list, it's frankly refreshing to see some other players make it into the top five. In fact, not a single game from the company made it into the top five, with FarmVille 2 ranked sixth. At the very least, it shows that smaller game studios still have a shot on Facebook among the EA's and Zynga's of the world.
