Colorado Department of Revenue's Gambling Intercept Payment System Recognized with National Award
DENVER--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- e.Republic's Center for Digital Government recently named Colorado's Gambling Intercept Payment System (GIP) as one of the best government-to-citizen solutions in its 2012 Best of the Web Digital Government Achievement Awards.
The Colorado Gambling Intercept Payment (GIP) System is an online service designed to intercept gambling winnings for outstanding court ordered child support and victim restitution. Today, thanks to the GIP system, any citizen indebted for child support or restitution in the State will have their cash winnings automatically intercepted at Colorado casinos or racetracks.
"GIP has been an important tool for collecting unpaid child support in the State," said Paulette St. James, Director of Colorado Division of Child Support Services, the State government agency charged with the enforcement of child support orders."Since July 1, 2008 we've collected over $1.6 million dollars in unpaid child support that would not have been collected without the GIP online system."
Colorado was the first State to implement a gambling intercept payment system in 2008. Several other states have followed Colorado's lead and used our system as a model for their intercept programs.
Following on the success in child support enforcement, court ordered restitution was added to GIP interceptions in late 2011.
"This project is the classic example of how public agencies and private partnerships can work together to implement new ideas.Our department, along with the Colorado State Judicial Branch, is proud of the program's achievements and honored by the Center for Digital Government for this award," said Paulette St. James.
The Digital Government Achievement Awards highlight outstanding agency and department websites and applications. Fifty-six awards in eight categories were given this year. Judges for this year's awards included representatives from the Center for Digital Government and officials from the 2011 Best of the Web-winning state and local governments.
The Center for Digital Government is a national research and advisory institute on information technology policies and best practices in state and local government. The Center is a division of e.Republic, a national publishing, event and research company focused on smart media for public sector innovation.
The Gambling Intercept Payment system has been made possible through a partnership between the Colorado Department of Revenue and Colorado.gov, which helps State and local government put their services online.
