AT&T Ups 2012 Smartphone Sales Estimate by 1 Million

AT&T (NYS: T) anticipates that it will sell 1 million more smartphones in fiscal 2012 than it previously expected, said the president and CEO of its Mobility unit. In a keynote address delivered at UBS's annual Global Media and Communications Conference in New York,Ralph de la Vega said that strong Q4 sales beginning with Black Friday indicated that AT&T would sell around 26 million of the devices this year, as opposed to its previous estimate of 25 million.

De la Vega also said the company has "worked through" its supply issues with Apple's (NAS: AAPL) most recent offering, the iPhone 5. He added that sales of competing devices such as Nokia's (NYS: NOK) Lumia 920 -- which the telecom provider carries exclusively -- have been strong lately.

Additionally, de la Vega said the shared-data plans introduced several months ago are popular, adding roughly 5 million customers since launch.
