Andrea Electronics Named as CES Innovations 2013 Design and Engineering Award Honoree

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Andrea Electronics(OTCBB: ANDR) today announced that it has been named an International CES Innovations 2013 Design and Engineering Awards Honoree for its new Stereo Array Microphone 5AMi, an iOS mobile device accessory providing innovative 3D surround sound recording and playback of live sound.

Products entered in this prestigious program are judged by a preeminent panel of independent industrial designers, engineers and members of the media to honor outstanding design and engineering in cutting edge consumer electronics products across 29 product categories.

The 5AMi Stereo Array Microphone is a revolutionary recording accessory that features a stereo digital adapter and ear mounted microphones that achieve true stereo surround sound capture for lifelike playback of live recordings.

Today, users of smart phones and tablet devices are recording live events more than ever. The camera and video quality of these mobile devices are rapidly increasing in pixel quality and resolution but the quality of the accompanying microphone does not measure up. The existing microphone's audio recording remains in mono capture with narrow frequency response and with only one setting for sound pickup sensitivity. The results are videos and audio recordings with poor one dimensional sound quality and typically have distortion as a common problem.

"With the 5AMi users can now record live music events and play them back in a life-like listening experience. The product is perfect for enhancing recorded audio content on iOS mobile devices capturing: music, recitals or precious family events" said Douglas Andrea, CEO of Andrea Electronics. "The stereo microphones placed for binaural sound capture provides a new unique 3D surround sound recording feature, never before provided by mobile devices. 3D recording and playback enhances live video and audio recordings to a new experience that sounds like actually being there again! We like to refer to this phenomenon as Audio Déjà Vu™."

Additionally, when used in conjunction with Andrea's new PureAudio Pro App, the 5Ami offers background noise reduction technology by forming a beam toward the source of your recording and blocking out noise outside of that beam. The Beam Forming directional microphone technology provides crystal clear recordings of voice notes, lectures and interviews. Students can take their iOS device to lectures and educational seminars, record the event and listen to it later in crystal clear quality for enjoyable replay and note taking concentration. Audio files can also be e-mailed and recording time is only limited by a devices memory capacity, therefore you never have to worry about cutting off the end of a long lecture or recital.

The 5AMi provides all the functionality your iOS device will need for high quality 16 Bit digital recordings. Whether recording in a 3D surround sound environment for true life playback or in a setting where background noise needs to be cancelled out, the 5AMi provides the perfect solution.

The prestigious Innovations Design and Engineering Awards are sponsored by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)®, the producer of the International CES, the world's largest consumer technology tradeshow, and have been recognizing achievements in product design and engineering since 1976.

Andrea Electronics 5AMi Stereo Array Microphone will be displayed in The Venetian at the 2013 International CES, which runs January 8-11, 2013 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Honorees will also be displayed at CES Unveiled: The Official Press Event of the International CES from 4-7 p.m. on Sunday, January 6 in the South Seas Ballroom C at Mandalay Bay.

The Innovations entries are judged based on the following criteria:

  • Engineering qualities, based on technical specs and materials used

  • Aesthetic and design qualities, using photos provided

  • The product's intended use/function and user value

  • Unique/novel features that consumers would find attractive

  • How the design and innovation of the product compares to other products in the marketplace
