Top employers for veterans

The jobs picture for many veterans has improved significantly during the last year, though those who served in Afghanistan and Iraq, in particular, still face challenges in finding employment. Programs, such as those spearheaded by President Obama, have helped to spur interest among employers in hiring vets.

The president's initiative, which includes the participation of more than 2,000 businesses has resulted in job opportunities for 125,000 veterans and their spouses, with pledges to hire some 250,000 more in coming years. Many employers have also established their own corporate recruiting plans aimed at former military members, including 100 that have been named the Top Military Friendly Employers of 2013, as compiled by G.I. Jobs.


Since 2003, the advocacy organization says, the average percentage of veterans hired by companies on its annual list has grown 138 percent, while the average number of full-time military recruiters has grown 68 percent and military recruiting budgets have grown 268 percent.

More companies have become aware of the advantages of hiring veterans, says Sean Collins, director at G.I. Jobs. "Veterans are instilled with what we call intangible assets," he says, "things that are increasingly rare that -- especially large corporations -- look for in leaders."

Those characteristics include the ability to adapt to fast-changing work environments and business strategies and become productive sooner. "Military folks are used to retooling and learning a brand new job every two to three years," Collins tells AOL Jobs. They're also experienced in working with diverse groups of people, with varied cultural backgrounds and educational levels.

To compile its list of top employers, now in its 10 year, G.I. Jobs says it relies on specific criteria and preferences, including:

  • The strength of the company's military recruiting efforts.
  • The percentage of new hires with prior military service.
  • Employment-retention efforts.
  • Company policies on National Guard and Reserve service.
