Northeast Utilities Sends Crews to Assist Utilities in New York & New Jersey
Operating companies wrap up Hurricane Sandy restoration in New England and answer the call to help
HARTFORD, Conn. & BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Hundreds of crews and support personnel from Northeast Utilities are heading south to help other utilities restore power to customers following the epic devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy. A contingent of workers from all NU operating companies are either already assisting in the efforts in New York and New Jersey, or will be heading there in the next 24 hours.

"Our crews have first-hand experience with the destruction caused by Sandy and are well-equipped to assist our neighbors in New York and New Jersey. The mutual aid effort comes after Northeast Utilities' operating companies restored power to approximately 1.5 million customers, half of its customer base, in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. The first contingent of workers to head south came from NSTAR Gas and Yankee Gas, who departed for New Jersey earlier this week to assist in natural gas related work for New Jersey Natural Gas Company. NSTAR has sent 23 underground workers to assist ConEd in New York City, as well as 20 substation personnel who are working in Long Island. In addition, approximately 60 CL&P employees, including line workers, mechanics, supervisors, and safety professionals, are heading to New York to assist ConEd today. They will be joined by 26 personnel from Public Service of New Hampshire (PSNH) and 17 workers from Western Mass Electric Company who are headed south to assist First Energy on Friday morning. The crews will stay on with their neighbor utilities for as long as needed, and will be joining 200 line workers from Hydro Quebec, NU's partner in the Northern Pass Transmission project.
