The annual Leader of the Year award program honors one Chicago-based business leader who has demonstrated the ability to execute leading-edge human capital practices while realizing business strategy success. Mr. Bell was selected by the HRMAC Board of Directors for his proven ability to lead by example, prioritize employees ahead of shareholders and implement successful human capital initiatives within the Veolia organization.
"Since becoming president and CEO of Veolia ES Technical Solutions, Jim has embraced human resources programs and tools as business drivers rather than business requirements," noted Katie Lawler, Senior Vice President, Human Resources, GATX and Chair, HRMAC Board of Directors. "He has continuously demonstrated his commitment as an HR champion, including serving as the executive sponsor of the 'People' goal for the organization's strategic plan and fostering a company culture that puts training, development and the safety of people at the core of its business practices. The company's record-breaking financial performance for two consecutive years is a testament to the success of these efforts and Jim's first-class leadership abilities."
Some key people achievements for Veolia ES Technical Solutions under Mr. Bell's leadership include:
Implementing new training and development initiatives to develop leaders at both the executive level and deep into the organization's next generation of leaders.
The 'President's Call for Excellence' quarterly award program, which recognizes employees who have demonstrated exceptional effort to aid a peer or a customer.
The open-forum 'Breakfast with Bell' project, held at Veolia operating locations to provide local employees an opportunity to ask candid questions and receive honest feedback.
Ms. Madell, the 2012 Volunteer of the Year, was also selected by the HRMAC Board of Directors. As a long-time HRMAC member, Ms. Madell has been a leader, a follower, a cheerleader and participant in nearly every type of event offered through HRMAC. She has mentored volunteers, leveraged best practices from the corporate arena into her HRMAC activities, actively recruited prospective members and served as a true peer-expert in her many speaking roles.
Ms. Madell currently serves HRMAC in the volunteer role of Membership Committee chair, which she has held for two years. Among the best membership activities initiated under her chairmanship are the regional Meet-and-Greet receptions and HRMAC's new three-month trial membership program.
Ms. Madell has clearly demonstrated her commitment to HRMAC and the practice of HR by her tireless efforts, enthusiastic participation and collaborative spirit. She meets all criteria of the award, most notably as an "unsung hero" who has gone above and beyond the call of duty while providing distinguished service to further the HRMAC mission.
SUMMIT 2012 is the largest annual gathering of human resources professionals in the Midwest and includes presentations by business and industry thought-leaders, a trade show and special events for various groups. Over 800 human resources professionals attended the event, held at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, Ill.
