Financial Protection Goes the Whole Nine Yards with Group Accident Plans

  • About 30 million children & teens in the U.S. participate in some type of sport or recreational activity1

  • Over 3.5 million children and teens suffer a sport related injury annually1

  • Highest rate of injury occurs in sports involving contact and collisions1

HARTFORD, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Sports and recreational activities are a great way for children and teens to stay active and build self-esteem. However, participating in a sport also leaves kids and teens vulnerable to injuries. Aetna (NYSE: AET) Voluntary Plans offer the Group Accident Plan to employers to help financially protect their employees against a child's unforeseen accident.

The Group Accident Plan makes cash payments directly to enrollees when they incur accident-related medical expenses, such as treatment for a broken bone, an ambulance ride, or outpatient physician treatment. Benefit checks can be used to pay for anything, such as day care, medical plan deductibles, mortgage payments or to make up for lost wages.

"Major medical insurance covers most medical expenses but not everyday costs. Taking care of an injured child could require parents to take time off from work and could affect household savings," said Frank McCauley, head of Aetna's Consumer Segment. "Accident plans are designed to keep families financially protected by helping to pay for unexpected medical bills, as well as everyday expenses such as daycare, groceries and utility bills."

According to the Medical University of South Carolina, each year approximately 775,000 children and teens are sent to the emergency room for sports related injuries such as sprains, strains, fractures, growth plate breaks, and heat stroke.2 Aetna Voluntary Plans can help protect members and help them remain financially healthy despite these types of unforeseen accidents.
