Company sector leader in Newsweek Green Rankings and Dow Jones Sustainability Index

DEERFIELD, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Baxter International Inc. (NYS: BAX) has ranked first among U.S. healthcare companies in Newsweek magazine's Green Rankings for the fourth time since the list's inception in 2009. Baxter has also been named the Medical Products Industry Leader of the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI World) and the Dow Jones Sustainability North America Index (DJSI North America) for the 11th year since the launch of the DJSI in 1999. Baxter Ranked First Among U.S. Healthcare Companies in Newsweek Magazine's Green Rankings

For the fourth consecutive year, Baxter ranked first in the healthcare category and 18th overall in the U.S. list of the 2012 Green Rankings produced by Trucost and Sustainalytics and published in Newsweek magazine. The rankings assess the largest publicly traded companies measured by revenue, market capitalization and number of employees, and each company's environmental impact, management and disclosure. Baxter Leads Medical Products Industry on the Dow Jones Sustainability World and North America Indices

Baxter has been named the 2012 Medical Products Industry Leader of the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI World) and the Dow Jones Sustainability North America Index (DJSI North America). This marks the 14th consecutive year that the company has been listed in the DJSI and the 11th year the company has been named Medical Products Industry Leader since the launch of the DJSI in 1999.

Baxter's leadership position resulted from top scores across a number of performance areas, including innovation management, strategy to improve access to products, environmental policy/management systems, operational eco-efficiency, bioethics, social reporting and stakeholder engagement.

The Dow Jones Sustainability Indices track the financial performance of the leading sustainability-driven companies worldwide, enabling investors to integrate sustainability considerations into their portfolios. Baxter Ranked First in Sector for Political Disclosure

Baxter was ranked as the Surgical, Medical, and Dental Instruments and Supplies sector leader for political disclosure, transparency, and accountability in the Center for Political Accountability (CPA) report The 2012 CPA-Zicklin Index of Corporate Political Accountability and Disclosure. The second annual index reports on the political disclosure policies of the top 200 companies in the S&P 500. Baxter's annual Political Contributions Report provides information about corporate contributions made in the United States by Baxter as well as contributions made by its Political Action Committee, BAXPAC. Baxter's Sustainability Efforts in India Receive Recognition

Baxter India was recently named ''The Best U.S. Company Operating in India'' in the Other Services category by the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce for human capital management, corporate social responsibility and overall contribution to Indo-U.S. business. Baxter India also received the ''Manufacturing Supply Chain Excellence Award'' in the Pharma/Life Sciences category by the Express Logistics and Supply Chain Conclave, an organization for logistics and supply chain professionals. Baxter has been operating in India for more than 15 years and employs approximately 1,100 staff nationwide.

Baxter is committed to operating responsibly in interest of the company's key stakeholders, including local communities. Examples of sustainability efforts in India include:

  • Reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 350 metric tons per year by leveraging multimodal transportation among manufacturing locations and warehouses.

  • Implementing innovative renewable energy strategies such as using biomass fuels rather than fuel oil. Baxter's manufacturing facilities in Alathur and Waluj use coconut shells, rice husks and sugar cane remnants as energy sources in boilers, which decreases fossil-fuel related greenhouse gas emissions, reduces energy costs and contributes to the local economy.

  • Participating in Making a Meaningful Difference Month each October, an initiative that rallies employees to give back to their local communities. In 2011, more than 700 Baxter India employees and their families volunteered 2,500 hours to improve the lives of people in their communities and care for the environment.

  • Supporting AmeriCares, Save the Children and Plan International India with grants through The Baxter International Foundation, Baxter's philanthropic arm, to increase access to healthcare.

2012 Malta Ambassador's Environmental Excellence Award

Baxter was recently named the recipient of the 2012 Ambassador's Environmental Excellence Award by the U.S. Embassy in Malta. The Ambassador praised Baxter for its leadership in implementing and engaging the community in initiatives that benefit the environment. Baxter has operated in Malta for more than 25 years and employs 400 staff nationwide.

For example, Baxter Malta has implemented a comprehensive Building Management System that includes energy monitoring and tracking, the use of geothermal energy, solar panels, an efficient compressed air system, and the extensive use of LED lights throughout the plant. All of these programs and more have contributed to the facility achieving the highest status in Baxter's Lean Energy Program that acknowledges energy efficiency of facility processes and systems.
