Newmont Mining Meets on the Top Line, Misses Where it Counts
Newmont Mining (NYS: NEM) reported earnings on Nov. 1. Here are the numbers you need to know.

For the quarter ended Sep. 30 (Q3), Newmont Mining met expectations on revenues and missed estimates on earnings per share.
Compared to the prior-year quarter, revenue contracted and GAAP earnings per share dropped significantly.

EPS came in at $0.85. The 17 earnings estimates compiled by S&P Capital IQ predicted $0.93 per share. GAAP EPS of $0.74 for Q3 were 24% lower than the prior-year quarter's $0.98 per share.

For the quarter, gross margin was 55.4%, 760 basis points worse than the prior-year quarter. Operating margin was 29.5%, 1,340 basis points worse than the prior-year quarter. Net margin was 14.8%, 320 basis points worse than the prior-year quarter.
Next quarter's average estimate for revenue is $2.88 billion. On the bottom line, the average EPS estimate is $1.24.
Next year's average estimate for revenue is $10.26 billion. The average EPS estimate is $3.86.
The stock has a four-star rating (out of five) at Motley Fool CAPS, with 1,153 members out of 1,238 rating the stock outperform, and 85 members rating it underperform.
