Sandy Socks It to Cell Towers

Sandy has largely passed but her impact is still being felt. The Federal Communications Commission reported Tuesday that roughly 25% of cell towers in 10 storm-soaked states were either disrupted or damaged.

In a conference call with reporters, agency Chairman Julius Genachowski said to expect that "outages could get worse before they get better." Most estimates say between 6 million and 7 million are still without power as of this writing.

Mobile service outages are more difficult to determine, though Verizon (NYS: VZ) said Tuesday that more than 200 of its facilities were running on backup power. Flooding had overtaken some portions of the company's Lower Manhattan headquarters.

Verizon's update from today states: "The effects of Hurricane Sandy have caused significant damage to Verizon locations and equipment along the East Coast. Many areas have experienced significant flooding due to the hurricane and storm surge. In addition, there are poles and lines down across all Verizon communities affected by this storm. Customers may experience a loss of all services ..."
