Hurricane Sandy Sinks Google Event

Updated

Thanks to the Frankenstorm known as Hurricane Sandy, Google (NAS: GOOG) canceled a Monday event in New York City that many expected to be the launching pad for a new Nexus smartphone and Samsung's latest Nexus tablet, a 10-inch alternative to the iPad.

According to Wired, Google notified invitees on Saturday via email: "We are canceling our Monday morning event in New York due to Hurricane Sandy. We will let you know our plans as soon as we know more. Stay safe and dry, The Android Team."

Now we'll have to wait, which means Microsoft (NAS: MSFT) gets to own Monday's headlines. Mr. Softy is scheduled to unveil details of Windows Phone 8 at an event in San Francisco scheduled to take place three hours following the now-canceled Nexus unveiling.

The dueling events are reflective of increasing intensity in the battle between Google and Microsoft.

On Friday, the search king posted to YouTube a video that tells users how to "get their Google back" after upgrading to Windows 8. Included are instructions for installing an updated version of the Chrome browser and a voice-activated search app.

Details of the new Nexus devices remain under wraps for now. Check back here for updates; we'll post details when Google reschedules its Android unveiling.
