3M Cogent High-speed Duplex Scanner Achieves FBI IQS Appendix F Certification

High throughput performance enhances 3M Cogent's card conversion service capability

PASADENA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- 3M Cogent announced today that the Improvision NPS2, the company's new high-speed duplex scanner, tested in full compliance and received certification from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for the Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification System (IAFIS) Image Quality Standard (IQS) Appendix F specification. Combined with the 3M CAFIS Scanning Software, the Improvision NPS2 is FBI IAFIS IQS Appendix F certified at 500 and 1000 ppi. Currently, the Improvision NPS2 is the only FBI-certified scanner able to simultaneously scan both sides of a document at 1000 ppi.

Equipped with an integrated automatic document feeder, 3M Cogent's Improvision NPS2 features fast image processing and can scan up to 1000 cards per hour. To avoid card damage during the scanning process, the scanner features a straight paper path with the ability to convert palm prints, photos, and text documents. The Improvision NPS2 is ideal for scanning large amounts of biometric cards, such as backlogs, in a restricted amount of time.

"The Improvision NPS2 enables us to offer a cost effective card conversion service to government agencies of any size," said Matt Pepe, president of 3M Cogent, Inc. "Converting hard copy records to searchable electronic formats will enhance our customers' biometric record management and identification capabilities."

The Improvision NPS2 comes at a time when the need for modernizing biometric record systems becomes much more significant in identity credentialing and identification services. The problem that many agencies face with converting outdated inked fingerprint cards to an electronic format is the extensive amount of time and manpower needed. With the Improvision NPS2's duplex scanning abilities and its rapid throughput, the scanner intuitively answers the needs of card processing.

About IAFIS IQS Specifications and Appendix F certification
Managed by the Criminal Justice Information Services, IAFIS IQS specifications provide criteria ensuring that the reproduction of image quality of such devices meets sufficient standards. For the Appendix F certification, the fingerprint scanner quality must meet designated parameters in reproducing the original fingerprint pattern. Factors used to quantify such parameters include geometric accuracy, gray-level dynamic range, and signal-to-noise ratio.
