Vitesse Unveils Industry's First Ethernet-Optimized Networking Solution for 4G/LTE Small Cells

Six-port Serval Carrier Ethernet Switch Engine Delivers Best-in-Class VeriTime Timing, OAM, and Networking Features with Unprecedented Low Power

CAMARILLO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Vitesse Semiconductor Corporation (NAS: VTSS) , a leading provider of advanced IC solutions for Carrierand Enterprise networks, has expanded its Serval™ Carrier Ethernet switch engine portfolio with the six-port Serval Lite (VSC7416). Serval Lite integrates Vitesse's IEEE1588v2VeriTime™ technology, already adopted by customers comprising 60% market share in microwave backhaul and 75% market share in millimeter-wavebackhaul. This latest Serval device is optimized for small cell applications, delivering rich Carrier Ethernet features at 75% lower power and 50% lower BOM cost than competitive options.


Market analysts project an estimated 64.2M small cell base stations in use by 2016, with the microwave small cell backhaul equipment market alone growing to $6.4B by 2017.

Advanced Feature Set in Ideal Form Factor

Serval Lite meets carrier grade small cell backhaul needs, integrating Carrier Ethernet features needed to support advanced packet-based services in a compact, low power package. At less than 1.5W power, Serval Lite simplifies thermal design, significantly reducing equipment costs in small form factor outdoor deployments.

Complementing the previously announced Jaguar™, LynX™ and Caracal™ switch engines for Carrier access, aggregation, and mobile applications, Serval family highlights include:

  • VeriTime nanosecond-accurate IEEE1588v2 timing technology that can meet LTE and LTE-Advanced network requirements, even over variable-rate and asymmetric millimeter wave and microwave links;

  • Support of multi-operator OAM&P and Service Level Agreements for Ethernet management, enabling RAN sharing and third-party backhaul ownership;

  • Hierarchical QoS (H-QoS) support for complex delivery of traffic with rich media content over 4G networks;

  • Integrated MIPS processor whichallows advanced protocol support without a discrete CPU in the board design, reducing overall BOM costs; and

  • Power dissipation under 1.5W, ideal for compact applications requiring a Power over Ethernet (PoE) solution.
