Alvarion® Chosen by Nama Khoi Municipality in South Africa to Provide Reliable Wireless Connectivity between Remote Offices
Alvarion provides robust, high speed connectivity across six key branches with ability to add additional services and save costs
TEL AVIV, Israel--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Alvarion®Ltd. (NAS: ALVR) , a global provider of optimized wireless broadband solutions addressing the connectivity, coverage and capacity challenges of public and private networks, announced today that the Municipality of Nama Khoi in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa has installed Alvarion's BreezeNET® B solution to connect six remote municipality offices to deliver critical data and transactional activity in real-time and create an infrastructure that will support additional services while saving operating costs.
The Nama Khoi Municipality in the Northern Cape stretches over a vast geographical area. Its head office in Springbok is the central hub and, from here, the municipality serves a number of smaller communities dependent upon Nama Khoi for services and utilities. Conventional telecommunications infrastructure in the area is notoriously poor and in some areas, non-existent. Furthermore, the extreme temperatures and adverse conditions in the Northern Cape create a major challenge for wireless networks.
"The connectivity we're experiencing with Alvarion's network is so reliable and fast, there are times when I actually forget that we're running a wireless solution," states Brandon Love, Chief Technology Officer, Nama Khoi Municipality. "Thanks to the care taken in scoping the project and choosing a solution that was proven in the region, our previous difficulties have been eliminated."
Following a comprehensive survey process, Alvarion's partner, Dimension Data, proposed the BreezeNET B solution for its high performance capability and robustness. A flawless roll-out saw six remote offices connected over four repeater sites in just two weeks. With the BreezeNET B's reliable connectivity, residents are able to purchase electricity, pay taxes and conduct their municipal business online without having to travel far distances either on foot or at considerable transport costs.
"We chose Alvarion's wireless broadband equipment as it is acknowledged globally for its high performance capabilities and robustness," states Dewald Booysen, Chief Technology Officer, Dimension Data Advanced Infrastructure. "We knew Alvarion's equipment would stand the harsh weather conditions as it has been tried, tested and deployed at many sites in Africa and is still working after many years in these conditions."
The system's structure allows the network to be expanded as needed, without replacing any hardware, by simply purchasing a 'soft key' to upgrade the system for more bandwidth. This accommodated the municipality's budget constraints, yet still provides readily available access to resources that may be required in future expansion.
"We are pleased we could provide the municipality with a wireless network that opens the door for a number of potential community improvement projects," states Zeev Farkash, Vice President of Sales at Alvarion. "This solution creates a firm foundation for Nama Khoi to pursue other cost containment initiatives that would otherwise be impossible without high-speed, reliable connectivity."
Opportunities include putting the network to use in the form of video surveillance at municipal pay points that would greatly enhance security for both municipal staff and members of the community. Also, the opportunity now exists to replace the municipality's traditional voice network with a VoIP solution that would greatly reduce cost for voice calls among branches.
