Motor Trend SUV of the Year: Mercedes GL

Motor Trendhas named the Mercedes-Benz GL the 2013 SUV of the Year. The famed automotive publication called the GL "the best the class has ever seen," and although the Ford (NYS: F) Escape and Nissan Pathfinder also vied as finalists for the prize, "in truth, it was no contest."

The model comes in three types: the GL350, GL450, and GL550. The 350 and 450 start at over $60,000, while the 550 starts at over $86,000. With additional features, the vehicles can run upwards of $100,000.

The GL was evaluated on six criteria: "Performance of Intended Function, Design Advancement, Engineering Excellence, Efficiency, Safety, and Value," and was tops in them all, according to the Motor Trend website. This is the second time the GL has gotten the much-coveted Motor Trend SUV of the Year award.
