Boeing, Alaska Airlines Ink $5 Billion Order
Boeing (NYS: BA) announced some good news today. It has signed a deal to supply Alaska Air Group's (NYS: ALK) Alaska Airlines with 50 new planes.
The order with a list price of more than $5 billion, the largest in Alaska Airlines' history, will include 37 of Boeing's new fuel-efficient 737 MAX planes as well as 13 Next-Generation 737-900ERs, according to the companies.
"This order demonstrates our hometown airline's strong commitment to operate the most fuel-efficient single-aisle airplanes in the market today and in the future," said Boeing Commercial Airplanes President Ray Conner in a press release.
The 737 MAX has now tallied 858 orders . Boeing boasts that "airlines operating the 737 MAX will see a 13 percent fuel-use improvement over today's most fuel-efficient single-aisle airplanes and an 8 percent operating cost per seat advantage over tomorrow's competition."
The news of this order follows the falling apart this week of a potential merger between Boeing's top rival, EADS-owned Airbus, and BAE, which would have created a big aerospace rival.
The planes of this order are set to arrive between 2015 and 2022.
