UnitedHealthcare Donates $63,000 to Louisiana Alliance of Boys & Girls Clubs to Help Broaden Membership, Programs

NEW ORLEANS--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- UnitedHealthcare is partnering with the Louisiana Alliance of Boys & Girls Clubs to ensure that local youths have a safe place to learn and grow. UnitedHealthcare is donating $63,000 to the Alliance to cover the cost of annual membership and broaden access to programs offered at Boys & Girls Clubs in Louisiana for children enrolled in the UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Louisiana.

The Louisiana Alliance includes nine member Boys & Girls Clubs organizations comprising 40 Club sites across the state that serve more than 32,000 children each year. The partnership will expand membership to the tens of thousands of children enrolled in the UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Louisiana, which provides health benefits and services to Medicaid beneficiaries in Louisiana, as part of the state's new Bayou Health program.

"We are very excited to partner with UnitedHealthcare to ensure our education and fitness programs reach more young people in our communities," said Pat Van Burkleo, president of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeast Louisiana and the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Baton Rouge. "The UnitedHealthcare donation will go a long way toward helping us ensure that kids have a safe place to learn and succeed, no matter what their life circumstances."

The Boys & Girls Clubs offer children between the ages of six and 18 a range of programs, including education, fitness, healthy living, arts and leadership development.

"UnitedHealthcare is grateful for the opportunity to expand the reach of Boys & Girls Clubs programs and services, which empower local youth to attain their full potential, to more children in Louisiana," said Ann Kay Logarbo, M.D., chief medical officer, UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Louisiana.

UnitedHealthcare also is partnering with the Boys & Girls Club/NFL Youth Education Town in New Orleans to offer JOIN for MESM, a community-based childhood obesity lifestyle-intervention program, to families enrolled in UnitedHealthcare Community Plan for Medicaid beneficiaries. This evidence-based program, which engages the entire family, has demonstrated promise to become a national model to meet the critical need for effective, accessible and affordable treatment for childhood obesity.

UnitedHealthcare serves more than 570,000 people in Louisiana, including more than 230,000 people enrolled in the UnitedHealthcare Community Plan.
