RI Research Instruments GmbH Awarded $5.8 Million Contract for Accelerating Cavities for FAIR Project in Germany

BERGISCH GLADBACH, Germany--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- RI Research Instruments GmbH, a majority-owned subsidiary of Bruker Energy & Supercon Technologies, Inc. (BEST), today announced the award of a contract for five radio frequency (rf) cavities for the Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) project, valued at approximately $5.8 million.

The contract includes design and construction of rf cavities with tunable frequencies from 1.1 MHz to 1.5 MHz. These cavities will be delivered over a four-year period and be operated in the collector ring, one of several FAIR synchrotron and storage rings.

FAIR will be built at the GSIHelmholtz Center for Heavy Ion Research in Darmstadt, Germany, and represents one of the largest research projects worldwide. FAIR is designed to provide antiproton and ion beams with unprecedented intensity and quality. In its final expected form, FAIR will consist of eight ring colliders of up to 1,100 meters in circumference each, two linear accelerators, and about 3.5 kilometers of beam-control tubes. The existing GSI accelerators will then serve as pre-accelerators.

Hanspeter Vogel, Managing Director of RI Research Instruments, explained: "With this accelerating cavity order, we broaden the spectrum of our rf accelerating devices to the extreme low frequency regime and expand our business opportunities accordingly."
