Humana Supports Veterans and Their Families Through Innovative Symposium in San Diego

Oct. 11 event offers specialized training for veterans in entrepreneurship and small business management

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Veterans and military families can learn more about entrepreneurship and small business management at a symposium hosted by Humana Inc. in partnership with the Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities on Thursday, Oct. 11 at The Lodge at Torrey Pines in San Diego.


The one-day symposium will build awareness of the Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities (EBV) program in the San Diego area. The EBV offers cutting edge, experiential training in entrepreneurship and small business management at no cost to post-9/11 veterans with service-connected disabilities. The symposium is open to veterans, military family members, veteran advisors and representatives of veterans' organizations and programs that assist veterans in returning to civilian life.

Last year, through its national Veterans Initiative, Humana committed to hire 1,000 veterans and/or their spouses over three years. To date, Humana has hired more than 800-plus veterans and/or their spouses in a variety of roles across the company. Humana is also contributing $1 million to the EBV as part of its national Veterans Initiative.

The EBV was established at Syracuse University's Martin J. Whitman School of Management and is operated by the university's Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF). The EBV is offered through a network of leading business and hospitality schools that includes Syracuse, the University of Connecticut, Florida State University, Louisiana State University, Purdue University, Texas A&M University, Cornell University and the University of California - Los Angeles (UCLA).

Representing the EBV program will be program graduate Brian Iglesias. Iglesias is a Marine officer and veteran of the war in Iraq. Iglesias' company, Veterans Expeditionary Media, creates and produces a variety of small and large-scale film and multi-media projects for a variety of customers.

Representing Humana will be Tim McClain, President of Humana's Government Business, who is a former San Diego resident. McClain is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and retired from the Navy's JAG Corps. In addition, Bob Nascenzi, President and CEO of nliven systems -- a Humana subsidiary that provides technology solutions to support lifelong well-being -- will also speak. Nascenzi is a serial entrepreneur and has mentored several start-ups in the San Diego community.

The symposium will begin with a deluxe continental breakfast at 8 a.m. Oct. 11 in the Maurice Braun Ballroom at The Lodge at Torrey Pines at 11480 North Torrey Pines Road in San Diego.
