Cigna HealthCare of Arizona Honors Breast Cancer Survivors at the Arizona Cardinals Breast Cancer Awareness Game

PHOENIX--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Five Cigna employees, along with other breast cancer survivors, will take part in a halftime performance with the Arizona Cardinals cheerleaders as part of Cigna HealthCare of Arizona's co-presenting sponsorship of the Cardinals' Breast Cancer Awareness Game on October 14, 2012 at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale. To recognize October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a large pink ribbon will be unveiled on the field during the performance.

"We are honored to publicly recognize and celebrate these five employees, who represent so many more employees at Cigna and people in our community who have been touched by breast cancer," said Stephanie Gorman, president and general manager of Cigna HealthCare of Arizona. "Through our sponsorship, we are working with the Cardinals to help educate the community about breast health and the importance of preventive health screenings."

Scottsdale resident Pamela Castro is one of the five Cigna employees honoring her own cancer journey by participating in the halftime show. "My favorite quote is from Olympic gold medalist and cancer survivor Scott Hamilton, 'The only disability in life is a bad attitude,'" said Castro. She is a breast cancer survivor of two years.

Other Cigna employees who are cancer survivors participating in the halftime show include:

  • Estella Arce of Tolleson

  • Krista Sullivan of Glendale

  • Kim Valdez of Phoenix

  • Joyce Wilkerson of Glendale

"One of the most common cancers diagnosed and reported among women in the United States is breast cancer," said Victoria Lee, M.D., a board certified general surgeon for Cigna Medical Group and member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons. "Self exams, annual physicals and mammograms are the key to early detection and the best chance of survival."

Before the game, fans are invited to Cigna's booth on the Great Lawn to have their picture taken with Arizona Cardinals alumni Bill Lewis and Frank Sanders. Fans will receive educational information on breast health, giveaways and have a chance to win a signed Calais Campbell #93 jersey.

In addition to the Breast Cancer Awareness game, this is the third season Cigna has partnered with the Cardinals to donate money to benefit a local charity with the "Kick for Kids" program. For every field goal the Cardinals make during the season, Cigna makes a contribution to Cardinals Charities. This year, the program benefits the Phoenix Children's Hospital.
