NU Expands Commitment to Green Button Initiative

Will soon offer website tool to all customers

HARTFORD, Conn. & BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Building on the popularity of the "Green Button" tool currently available to its NSTAR Electric customers in Massachusetts, Northeast Utilities is rolling out the energy-saving initiative at all six of its utility companies in Connecticut, Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Green Button - an industry-led effort responding to a White House call to action to provide national uniformity for how customers can securely access their own energy usage data - will be available to all of NU's more than 3 million residential and business customers by the end of this year.

"In the six months since we introduced it, Green Button has helped thousands of our Massachusetts customers easily access their electricity use information with the click of a mouse," said Tom May, President and CEO of Northeast Utilities. "Knowledge is power when it comes to customers making changes to their energy use behavior and Green Button is making it easy for folks to gain that knowledge."

All customers will soon find the Green Button on NU's subsidiary company websites - Connecticut Light and Power; Yankee Gas; Western Massachusetts Electric; NSTAR Electric; NSTAR Gas; and Public Service of New Hampshire - which utilizes the common-sense idea promoted by the White House that electricity customers should be able to securely access their own detailed energy usage information from their utility's website.

A number of companies are already developing web and smartphone applications and services that can use Green Button data to deliver customized energy-efficiency tips, provide easy-to-use tools to size and finance rooftop solar panels, and conduct virtual energy assessments that can cut costs for building owners and speed the initiation of retrofits.
