Motorola Solutions, International Association of Chiefs of Police Recognize Outstanding Law Enforcement Programs
IACP's 119th annual conference in San Diego setting for recognition of winning police departments from Albuquerque, N.M.; Fontana, Calif. and Lighthouse Point, Fla.
SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- (IACP, Motorola Solutions, Booth #2104) -Innovative law enforcement programs from around the world were honored today with the 20th annual IACP/Motorola Webber Seavey Award for Quality in Law Enforcement. The award, sponsored jointly by Motorola Solutions, Inc. (NYS: MSI) and the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), this year honors programs targeting serial criminal activity, youth intervention and transient interdiction. The winners include the Albuquerque, N.M.; Fontana, Calif. and Lighthouse Point, Fla. police departments.
KEY FACTS
The Albuquerque Police Department is being recognized for its "Organized Crime Unit (OCU)," which works directly with private sector partners to identify, investigate and arrest offenders involved in serial criminal activity. In less than nine months, the OCU made 132 felony and 62 misdemeanor arrests, and nearly 100 cases were forwarded to the district attorney's office for felony prosecution. Other jurisdictions are building on this initiative to address property crime.
The City of Fontana Police Department, in collaboration with the Fontana Unified School District, is tackling serious issues facing at-risk youth from middle through high school with its Fontana Leadership Intervention Program (FLIP). FLIP is an intensive, 16-week,community-based program targeting factors such as gangs, domestic violence and truancy and then taking a holistic approach to teach youth skills and strategies for improved academics and dealing with real-life issues. At one high school, truancy dropped 87 percent and defiant behavior decreased 65 percent during the school year.
The Lighthouse Point Police Department realized the city's proximity to large urban areas made it a desirable target for transient offenders using stolen vehicles or stolen license plates to enter the city and commit burglaries to vehicles, residences and businesses. Through the Transient Offender Interdiction Program, police use license plate recognition technology to create a perimeter monitoring system to increase interception of these offender vehicles entering the city. Lighthouse Point Police increased the recovery of stolen vehicles and burglary clearances by 220 percent during the first 11 months of the Transient Offender Interdiction Program.
The Webber Seavey Award is named for IACP's first president. The 2012 award attracted a field of more than 60 applicants from around the world sharing their positive experiences with peers in the law enforcement community.
