Ryder Technician Christopher Barnett is Named TMCSuperTech 2012 Grand Champion

Ryder Technician Wins Top Spot in National Technical Skills Competition Held by the American Trucking Associations' Technology & Maintenance Council

MIAMI--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Ryder System, Inc. (NYS: R) , a leader in transportation and supply chain management solutions, today announced Senior Technician Christopher Barnett was named TMCSuperTech Grand Champion at the eighth annual National Technician Skills Competition held by the American Trucking Associations' Technology & Maintenance Council (TMC). The TMCSuperTech 2012 competition, which gathered 130 technicians from across the country, consisted of a day-long test with 17 hands-on skills stations to test an array of general truck maintenance and troubleshooting skills, as well as electronic diagnostics applications, and safety and environmental practices. Mr. Barnett's consistently high scores in each test event placed him in the first place for the overall competition score.

Mr. Barnett, who is based out of Ryder's Hebron, Ky., service facility, was selected along with nine other teammates from Ryder to represent the company at TMCSuperTech. Ryder selects its TMCSuperTech team from its technician population of more than 4,000 diesel technicians through Ryder's own National Top Technician Competition, an internal competition that consists of three increasingly demanding rounds of challenging written and hands-on tests. This year, nine team members were chosen from their performance in past Ryder Top Technician Competitions and one team member was selected based on his performance on ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) Testing. Ryder recognized and rewarded its National Top Technician winner with a brand new GMC Denali pick-up truck, a trophy, and cash award, and it its second, third, and runner-up winners with various prizes. Mr. Barnett also placed among the top three winners of Ryder's 2012 National Top Technician Competition.

"For several years now, Christopher has ranked among our top winners in Ryder's Top Technician Competition and TMCSuperTech. We are very proud but not at all surprised by his win," said Jeanette McCarty, Ryder's Vice President of Maintenance Operations and Engineering. "Heavy duty engine platforms are constantly changing, and our technicians are faced with the challenge of staying abreast with new technologies and practices. We encourage them to learn these new technologies by providing ongoing training and a number of our own recognition programs, and by encouraging participation in these industry events, which help to elevate standards for everyone."

In addition to winning the top spot, three other Ryder technicians also ranked among the top ten winners in the overall competition at TMCSuperTech: Robert Gonzalez, based in Tampa, Fla., who won fifth place; Michael Bogard, based in Neenah, Wis., who won seventh place; and Timothy Peters, based in Hickory, N.C., who won eighth place. Ryder technicians also won four station events: David Berdovich, based in Harvey, Ill. (for tires and wheels, and for engines); Michael Bogard (for starting and charging); and Robert Gonzalez (for steering and suspension).
