Semtech Featured in Live Demonstration of the Interoperability of 100G Channels at the Optical Internetworking Forum at ECOC 2012

CAMARILLO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Semtech Corporation (NAS: SMTC) , a leading supplier of analog and mixed-signal semiconductors, today announced it will be participating in the Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF) demonstration of the CEI-28G-VSR Implementation Agreement (IA) at ECOC 2012 in Amsterdam.

One of the OIF demonstrations will feature Semtech and TE Connectivity Ltd.(TE) showcasing an active copper cable (ACC) application leveraging the QSFP-28Gb/s form factor operating at 25.78 Gb/s. This demonstration will include the TE 28-Gb/s QSFP-ACC assembly, which features Semtech GN2425/26 25-28-Gbps clock and data recovery (CDR) chips.

The TE 28-Gb/s QSFP-based ACC assembly supports OIF CEI-28-VSR applications as well as next-generation 100-Gb/s Ethernet and 100-Gb/s InfiniBand Enhanced Data Rate (EDR) applications. It transmits between 25 Gb/s -28 Gb/s data rates over 2 meters of four-channel (eight pairs), 34gauge copper cable. This reduced wire gauge results in a cable assembly with a 5.8mm overall diameter — enabling increased airflow and improved cable management.

"TE is pleased to participate with Semtech in this important demonstration that showcases real-world solutions for cable management issues," said Nathan Tracy, Communications Industry Manager at TE and OIF Technical Committee Vice Chairman. "This demonstration is a great example of a solution that meets the communications and networking industries' need for a small, 100-Gbps connection."

Semtech's GN2425/26 CDRs extend the reach and robustness of 25 Gb/s copper links by compensating for losses in the transmission medium and by resetting the jitter budgets. This reach is accomplished though industry leading sensitivity and jitter performance, which also enables reduced module power as the amount of required electrical equalization is reduced. The host side of Semtech's CDRs features industry leading performance, which exceeds the CEI-28G-VSR IA requirements.

By utilizing low-jitter CDR's, Semtech is enabling copper cable assemblies to extend the reach of thin-gauge ACC solutions. This is an important step as short reach ACC's play a critical role in the roll out of 100-Gb/s systems and next-generation consumer interconnectivity applications.

"Active cables offer optimal reach and power while simplifying the design of the high-speed serial link between the host ASIC and the cable connector," said Imran Sherazi, Vice President, Marketing and Applications, in Semtech's Gennum Product Group. "Teaming up with TE to demonstrate these advantages helps to increase industry awareness and adoption of Active Cables as a solution for system designers."

A public demonstration of the event will be on display September 17-19, 2012 at ECOC in Amsterdam, OIF Booth #269. Additional information can be found at: http://www.oiforum.com/public/OIF_Interoperability_ECOC_2012.html

Several companies, including Semtech, will unite under the banner of the Optical Internetworking Forum to showcase multi-vendor participation in OIF interoperability. The OIF's physical layer and link layer demonstrations will feature host ASICs with VSR SERDES, host PCB traces, optical module connectors, module retimers, active copper cable assemblies, optical transceivers, host ASICs with LR SERDES, backplane PCBs and backplane connectors.
