Praxair Selected for Dow Jones Sustainability World Index for the Tenth Consecutive Year

DANBURY, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Praxair, Inc. (NYS: PX) has been selected as a component of the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index and is the only U.S. based company in the chemical sector selected for the World Index for ten consecutive years.

Membership in the World Index ranks Praxair among the top eleven chemical companies worldwide in terms of sustainability leadership. Praxair is also a member of the Dow Jones Sustainability North America Index, which places it among the top 20 percent of companies in its sector in North America.

"We are honored to again be included in this premier index of corporate sustainability," said Steve Angel, Praxair chairman and chief executive officer. "A 10-year record of membership makes it clear that sustainable development is fundamental to our strategy and core business. This achievement is a testament to the thousands of Praxair employees around the world who are helping each day to make our planet more productive."

A significant portion of Praxair's annual revenues are derived from applications technologies which help our customers reduce their environmental footprint, improve their energy efficiency and/or increase the throughput, or yield of their production process, thereby decreasing their use of raw materials. For example, an evaluation of three market applications that contributed approximately 11 percent of sales enabled customers to avoid 23-million MT CO2e - an amount that exceeded all Praxair GHG emissions by seven million MT. More examples can be found on www.praxair.com in the Products and Technologies>Technologies>Green Technologies section.

The Dow Jones Sustainability Index was launched in 1999 to track the performance of leading corporations that are committed to sustainability on a global scale. Corporations are selected for the index after a thorough assessment of a wide range of economic, environmental and social criteria. Among the areas evaluated are corporate governance, environmental performance, risk management, supply-chain standards and labor practices.
