Hamptons' First Eco-Container Home on Sale for $1.3 Million

Hamptons eco-container home

This may not be your typical Hamptons luxury manse, but it's definitely our kind of home. It's made from repurposed steel shipping containers, it's eco-friendly and, best of all, it's right on the beach. And we don't mean that in a vague, broker-babble kind of way. We mean, it's literally built on the sand and is a mere 600 feet from the ocean.

The stunning certified-sustainable "Beach Box" in Amagansett, N.Y., is but another addition to the growing eco-friendly housing movement that has container architecture and prefab homes at its forefront. According to the listing, it's the Hamptons' very first eco-container home and was apparently built in a day.

Whether that's true or not, it may be one of the nicest eco-container homes we've ever seen. The 2,000-square-foot house boasts "beauty chic" whitewashed oak floors, cypress siding and cedar decking -- all sustainable materials, all easy on the eyes. The home also features a sprawling 1,300 square feet of exterior decking from which you can enjoy views of Nepeague Harbor and a stunning dune preserve. (What New Yorkers wouldn't do for a spacious outdoor deck!)

Other eco-friendly features include a tankless/instantaneous water-heating system and central HVAC units for maximum energy efficiency.

Like what you see? The green contemporary will set you back $1.395 million, which, for most of us, may seem pricey, but not in an area where homes of similar size are going for around $4.8 million. If you're sitting on that kind of bankroll, it's a pretty reasonable number.

Christopher Stewart and Tania Deighton have the listing.
