Is This Microsoft's Smartest Move Yet?

Updated

The following video is part of our "Motley Fool Conversations" series, in which Chief Technology Officer Jeremy Phillips and senior technology analyst Eric Bleeker discuss topics across the investing world.

Microsoft and a social initiative...it has to fail, right? That was Eric and Jeremy's first reaction as well. The company has repeatedly entered already mature markets with dominate leaders too late and come up short -- hello Zune and search! However, Microsoft's new So.cl search initiative has promise. Eric appreciates that Microsoft's R&D finally is aligning better with future opportunities, but he is more excited about how an opportunity like this could strengthen its ties with Facebook. While it could be a long-shot, Microsoft's greatest opportunity to long-term Internet relevance could be partnering its search capabilities with Facebook's immense user base data.
