PPL Outruns Estimates Again

PPL (NYS: PPL) reported earnings on May 4. Here are the numbers you need to know.

For the quarter ended March 31 (Q1), PPL crushed expectations on revenues and beat expectations on earnings per share.

Compared to the prior-year quarter, revenue improved significantly and GAAP earnings per share increased.

PPL logged revenue of $4.11 billion. The five analysts polled by S&P Capital IQ foresaw sales of $3.14 billion on the same basis. GAAP reported sales were 41% higher than the prior-year quarter's $2.91 billion.

EPS details
EPS came in at $0.70. The 14 earnings estimates compiled by S&P Capital IQ averaged $0.66 per share. GAAP EPS of $0.93 for Q1 were 13% higher than the prior-year quarter's $0.82 per share. (The prior-year quarter included $0.01 per share in earnings from discontinued operations.)

Margin details
For the quarter, gross margin was 34.2%, 310 basis points worse than the prior-year quarter. Operating margin was 25.6%, 210 basis points worse than the prior-year quarter. Net margin was 13.2%, 60 basis points worse than the prior-year quarter.

Looking ahead
Next quarter's average estimate for revenue is $2.26 billion. On the bottom line, the average EPS estimate is $0.44.

Next year's average estimate for revenue is $11.21 billion. The average EPS estimate is $2.33.
