Have fun drawing ads for Zynga in Draw Something

Everyone likes advertising, right? (Honestly, this writer does, though purely for the occasional spurts of creativity.) Zynga sure hopes you do, as the developer has pushed several new words for players to doodle in Draw Something. Thing is, they all revolve around the NHL teams going head-to-head in the Stanley Cup playoffs and hockey in general.

According to Ad Age, Zynga already experimented with advertising-heavy words like "Doritos", "Nike" and "KFC". "People loved to draw the Colonel and bags of Doritos," Zynga New York VP and GM Dan Porter told Ad Age. Now, the NHL has likely paid big for the numerous words related to its various teams. It's like having your own creative advertising team that you don't have to pay salaries for.

Before this revelation, the only ads in Draw Something were the banner ads pushed out between turns, similar to Words With Friends and other turn-based mobile social games. Now Zynga has opened up a whole new source of ad revenue for its most popular mobile game, but will the effort suffer from poor timing.

This new advertising initiative comes just as Draw Something's popularity beings to wane. In just the past 30 days, the mobile hit has lost nearly 5 million daily players, just after creator OMGPOP was acquired by Zynga. It will likely take more than ads to bring back those players, so grab the popcorn and wait to see what Zynga cooks up next.
