Ecolab (NYS: ECL) reported earnings on May 1. Here are the numbers you need to know.

EPS came in at $0.50. The 17 earnings estimates compiled by S&P Capital IQ anticipated $0.48 per share. GAAP EPS of $0.17 for Q1 were 58% lower than the prior-year quarter's $0.40 per share.

Margin details
For the quarter, gross margin was 42.6%, 670 basis points worse than the prior-year quarter. Operating margin was 7.4%, 360 basis points worse than the prior-year quarter. Net margin was 1.8%, 440 basis points worse than the prior-year quarter.
