Gold Medal Skier Lindsey Vonn Owed $1.7 Million in Back Taxes
Lindsey Vonn has been singularly successful on the slopes: Last month it was announced that the American earned $608,000 in Alpine World Cup prize money, making her the most successful skier of the season, during which she won 12 events and her fourth women's overall title. But lurking behind that amazing run was an unpaid tax bill of Olympian proportions -- more than $1.7 million, according to public records cited by The Detroit News.
Vonn owes the money from 2010, the year she took Olympic gold in downhill at Vancouver. "The IRS filed a $1,705,437 against Vonn and her estranged husband Thomas on April 2 with the Elko Country Reorder in Nevada," the News reports.

For her part, Vonn moved swiftly to settle the bill. In a statement posted on her Facebook page, Vonn explained, "I just recently became aware of the outstanding balance and have done everything in my power to settle it immediately." She said her 2010 return was filed on time, and that her debt to Uncle Sam was now "paid in full."

"This is an important lesson for me," Vonn concluded. "Not being in control of my finances and relying on someone else who you believed had your best interest at heart was a mistake" -- an allusion to Vonn's husband, according to The Christian Post-- "and one I will not make twice."
Vonn could probably use some professional help managing her money: In addition to her World Cup earnings, the alpine star boasts lucrative endorsements with Under Armour (UA), Rolex, Red Bull and Procter and Gamble (PG).
