House of the Day: Poet Robert Lowell's NYC Studio

Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Robert Lowell (pictured below left) was clearly a troubled man. His celebrated but melancholy poems, "For the Union Dead" and "To Speak of Woe That Is in Marriage," paint a picture of a lonely soul. And though we get the whole "tortured artist" thing (so chic!), what we can't understand is how anyone could be unhappy in this home.

Lowell's wonderfully bright writing atelier, located on Manhattan's Upper West Side "artist's block," seems perpetually radiant with northeastern sunlight and cinematic views over New York City's leafy, brownstone-studded West Side.

The home's beautiful, arched lobby is decorated with murals painted in 1906 by Robert V. Sewell and the space boasts soaring ceilings and large windows. It's located in a historic building built in 1905, and designed by architects Simonson, Pollard and Steinem of Hotel des Artistes fame. And it could be all yours for the modest (by New York standards, anyway) price of $685,000.

Though the apartment is small (it features just one bedroom, a sleeping loft and one bathroom), it has everything a writer could possibly need -- plus access to a stunning rooftop garden with more expansive views.
