Angry Birds get even more famous this fall with animated web series

Are you ready for the Angry Birds variety hour? Starting this fall, Finnish developer Rovio will debut and air 52 animated shorts each week featuring the irate little birdies. Episodes in the weekly web series will typically last about three minutes, according to Rovio animation head Nick Dorra, Pocket Gamer reports. We call it a web series, because Rovio wants it on every dang screen imaginable.

"We're going to roll it out on all possible devices," Dorra told an audience at the MIPTV conference, according to Pocket Gamer. "We're looking at building a video app for that, and we're also looking at partnerships and so on... We want to be on all screens." (Of course, the studio behind the imminent web TV show is Kombo, which Rovio acquired back in 2011.)

Pocket Gamer reports that Dorra went on to say that the cartoon will go beyond the basics of the game and explore each bird's story. "It's about telling more engaging stories... and deeper thoughts, deeper feelings of the characters, such as why are they always angry?" Dorra continued. "Angry Birds is not just about the gameplay, and will be in the future less and less about the slingshot, actually, and more and more about the characters."

With that, Rovio looks to bide its time--or more likely buy some time--ahead of its feature film release in 2014 or later. Will a year's worth of three-minute shorts be able to do that? We'll see--well, let's just get through 2012 alive first.
