SOE's Vanguard is losing the subscription, going free-to-play

As Sony Online Entertainment continues to embrace its "Free to Play. Your Way" ideology, this week marks the announcement that another of the company's lineup will soon open its gates to the masses for no charge. Vanguard: Saga of Heroes launched back in 2007 and has since faced its share of ups and downs in terms of player, and even SOE support. Director of Development Andy Sites has addressed the public via the game's official website, letting us know that the game will soon be going free-to-play in a manner that's "similar to EverQuest, Everquest II and DC Universe."

Along with an apology over the lack of gameplay updates, Sites went on to announce that members of Vanguard's original development team have been brought back on board to make sure the game's transition to a free-to-play model offers plenty of incentive for the new player. "A few weeks ago, we began ramping up the Vanguard development team with some familiar faces," says Sites. "Our criteria was simple; we wanted the most Vanguard-knowledgeable, passionate developers."

There's no exact launch date for the switch to the free-to-play model (we do know it will happen sometime this summer), and all other details about the game's freebie form are still unknown. We'll make sure to update you when we learn more about the game's switch from paid to free, so keep checking back!
