Frogger: Hyper Arcade Edition will leap onto smartphones this year

Frogger made his way to iPhone late last year via Frogger Free, but if that isn't enough obstacle-dodging gameplay for you, you'll be excited to learn that Konami has announced Frogger: Hyper Arcade Edition, a new installment in the classic franchise that will combine some of Konami's other classic franchises with the cute green frog.

Frogger: Hyper Arcade Edition is set to offer the same classic gameplay you'd expect from the series (that being to make your way from the bottom of the level to the top while avoiding obstacles), but will also combine that with new gameplay modes like "Tile Capture," "Battle Royale," and "Freak Out," among others. According to the official Frogger Facebook fan page, these modes are set to "expand the challenge" of the classic gameplay.

In addition, we'll see various themed levels being available for the classic gameplay mode, as you make Frogger dodge Dance Dance Revolution arrows, explore the castles of Castlevania or leap through the jungles of Contra while avoiding Aliens. No word yet on whether or not the Konami Code will come into play in this level, but a gamer can only hope.

Frogger: Hyper Arcade Edition doesn't have a set release date as of this writing, but we know it will launch this spring on smartphones (presumably on both the iOS and Android platforms), Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network and Nintendo WiiWare. We'll bring you more information about the mobile versions of the game as we learn more, so keep checking back!
