Leap Day Deals: Snag These Once-in-Four-Years Offers
Shoppers often leap at opportunities to snatch up bargains or freebies. And companies are banking on that impulse in light of Leap Day, which comes but once every four years.
Here's a handful of the leap year promotions you'll find today.
Chick-fil-A: The fast food chicken chain is giving away free Chick-n-Minis at some participating stores.
Disneyland: Although it's not offering a sales promotion, Disney (DIS) is getting into the leap year spirit. For the first time ever, the Disneyland in California and the Magic Kingdom Park in Florida are staying open for 24 hours straight. The event started at 6 a.m. Feb. 29. Some Disney restaurants are joining in the festivities with extended hours.
Facebook: The world's biggest social network is plastered with Leap Day promotions from all types of businesses on its site. Search on Facebook to see what tickles your fancy.
Frontier Airlines: Frontier Airlines (RJET) is holding a "Leap Year Sale" on flights to 65 cities. But you better hurry: Discounted sales must be booked before midnight on Feb. 29, and tickets have to be used by May 9.
McDonald's: You'll have to look around locally to find out what McDonald's is doing for Leap Day near you. Regional operators of (MCD) are said to be offering Leap Day deals such as buy-one-get-one-free offers on particular sandwiches, a cup of coffee on the house, as well as 29-cent hamburgers. But a spokesperson told DailyFinance that the company is not doing an official leap year promotion at the corporate level, and couldn't confirm the details of local McDonald's promotions.
Staples: Staples (SPLS) touts "29 savings offers to commemorate the extra day this year" for its Leap Year Sale Event. The sale, available online and in the office-supply retailer's stores, includes discounts on everything from copier paper and binders to desk chairs, digital cameras, printers and laptop computers.
Verizon Wireless: Verizon Wireless (VZ) is offering a Leap Day online discount of $100 off what it calls the best 4G LTE devices, ranging from the Motorola Droid line of smartphones to the Samsung Galaxy tablet.
Zappos: The online shoe emporium -- which also sells clothing -- will extend its 365-day return policy to 1,461 days. The extension will last only for purchases made during the 24 hours of Leap Day, "giving indecisive shoppers the luxury of waiting four years to decide if they want to keep or return an item," the company said in a statement.
