New Jersey Resources Beats Analyst Estimates on EPS

For the quarter ended Dec. 31 (Q1), New Jersey Resources whiffed on revenues and beat expectations on earnings per share.
Compared to the prior-year quarter, revenue contracted, and GAAP earnings per share grew significantly.
Margins grew across the board.
New Jersey Resources logged revenue of $642.4 million. The two analysts polled by S&P Capital IQ hoped for revenue of $743.3 million on the same basis. GAAP reported sales were 9.9% lower than the prior-year quarter's $713.2 million.

Non-GAAP EPS came in at $1.09. The four earnings estimates compiled by S&P Capital IQ anticipated $0.73 per share on the same basis. GAAP EPS of $1.38 for Q1 were 134% higher than the prior-year quarter's $0.59 per share.

For the quarter, gross margin was 15.4%, 570 basis points better than the prior-year quarter. Operating margin was 11.7%, 610 basis points better than the prior-year quarter. Net margin was 8.9%, 550 basis points better than the prior-year quarter.
Next quarter's average estimate for revenue is $1.01 billion. On the bottom line, the average EPS estimate is $1.60.
Next year's average estimate for revenue is $3.16 billion. The average EPS estimate is $2.69.
