BrainJewel moves from Facebook to iPad, but the transition isn't free

Updated

TribePlay's BrainJewel launched on Facebook last year, but if you really enjoyed the brain-testing memory and math mini-games therein, and want to take the game with you wherever you go, you can now do just that by downloading the new iPad version of the game.

We had a chance to go hands-on with this iPad version of BrainJewel, and have found that the game is a basic port of the Facebook version. That is, it contains the same power-ups and mini-games, but most of these actually do play better with the touchscreen format. For instance, in one of the first memory games in BrainJewel, you'll be shown a checkered board, with items scattered on random squares. You'll need to remember which individual squares contain items after they disappear, so it's much easier to quickly tap on squares in rapid succession by using your fingers than using a mouse on Facebook.

Still, BrainJewel on iPad isn't free, and it will set you back $1.99 as of this writing. It's unusual for a free Facebook game experience to suddenly go pay-to-play, and as the game simply offers the same experience you can find on Facebook for free, it will be interesting to see just how long this pay-to-play model holds up, or if TribePlay will eventually be forced to make the game free.
