General Cable (NYS: BGC) reported earnings on Feb. 8. Here are the numbers you need to know.

For the quarter ended Dec. 31 (Q4), General Cable missed estimates on revenues and missed expectations on earnings per share.

Compared to the prior-year quarter, revenue grew slightly, and GAAP earnings per share contracted significantly.

EPS details
Non-GAAP EPS came in at $0.30. The eight earnings estimates compiled by S&P Capital IQ averaged $0.37 per share on the same basis. GAAP EPS of $0.09 for Q4 were 86% lower than the prior-year quarter's $0.66 per share.

Margin details
For the quarter, gross margin was 9.3%, 170 basis points worse than the prior-year quarter. Operating margin was 2.3%, 250 basis points worse than the prior-year quarter. Net margin was 0.3%, 230 basis points worse than the prior-year quarter.

Looking ahead
Next quarter's average estimate for revenue is $1.42 billion. On the bottom line, the average EPS estimate is $0.32.

Next year's average estimate for revenue is $6.10 billion. The average EPS estimate is $3.02.
