House of the Day: Not Your Typical Farmhouse

Updated

Though the name "Oldfield Farm" may conjure images of a charming, rustic property complete with barn, hayloft and livestock, the Oldfield Farm in Greenwich, Conn., is anything but.

This grand, Palladian-style mansion, currently on the market for $39.6 million, is about as far from down-home living as you can get. Featuring eight bedrooms and 12 bathrooms, the 15,000-square-foot manse includes a theater, a wine cellar, a billiard room, seven fireplaces, six powder rooms, a sunroom, a fitness room and a sauna. The entire estate was designed by architect Robert Lamb Hart and decorated by Mark Hampton.

For those who insist on having the traditional rural elements, however, the grounds do offer some provincial features. Sort of. There are twin stables with 39 horse stalls, generous paddocks and lush meadows, a greenhouse, a polo field and a gazebo. Oh, and a huge heated swimming pool and tennis courts. Really, who needs to rough it?
