Amazon Offers Price Check App Users a Special One-Day Reward

In a one-day ploy to get consumers in the holiday shopping spirit, on Dec. 10, Amazon.com (AMZN) will reward shoppers who use its Price Check mobile app with a 5% discount (of up to $5) on three qualifying products. Eligible product categories include electronics, toys, music, sporting goods and DVDs.

The e-commerce giant predicts this Saturday will go down in the record books as one of the biggest days of the year for its free Price Check app, which is available for the iPhone and Android phones.

It's no secret that price check apps are redefining the shopping experience, placing more power in the hands of consumers who can now easily learn who's offering the lowest price on a particular item. Retailers like Amazon are fighting back by looking for new ways to reward shoppers in the throes of their mobile bargain hunts.

In addition to the Dec. 10 promotion, Amazon shoppers themselves can use the app to submit in-store prices to the retailer.

"We scour online and in-store advertisements from other retailers, every day, year round," said Sam Hall, director of Amazon Mobile, in a statement. "Now we are enabling customers to use the Price Check app to share in-store prices when they search for the best deals."

The idea is to engage Amazon shoppers in the quest for bargains and ensure that "Amazon customers get the best possible prices," he says.
