House of the Day: Rich With History, Not Luxury

Updated

Not every home needs to offer the space of an airport hangar or flaunt a seven-digit price tag to capture your imagination. Sometimes, if you're able to appreciate more than gargantuan dimensions and bed-of-roses finishes, you can find other homes just as splendid in their own salt-of-the-earth way. So in a break from our usual go-big-or-go-home approach to House of the Day, we thought we'd feature one of the more discreet residential gems out on the market. This one deserves the spotlight because of its rich history.

Built in 1880, the Ballentine Farmhouse has been around since before the town it's located in, North Haledon, N.J., was even, well, a town. (It wasn't incorporated until the early 1900s.) The home, stewarded under Kimberly Fischer-Bunyan, who is only its third owner, has undergone renovations in recent years aimed at fully restoring the house's original design and integrity. Fischer tells us she has restored nearly everything, from the home's original wavy glass cabinets to its 19th century-style woodwork.
