Macy's, Target Up Black Friday Ante with Midnight Store Openings

Updated

Setting a new holiday shopping tradition, Macy's (M) and Target (TGT) will swing open their doors at midnight on Black Friday for the first time ever, giving shoppers a jump start on door-buster sales while offering an implicit challenge to their fellow retail brethren to follow suit.

Both retailers will open at 12 a.m. on Thanksgiving night.

In a statement, Macy's CEO Terry Lundgren said the decision was in direct response to shoppers' "eagerness to shop early for great deals."

Macy's Black Friday deals include 50% off Sharper Image iPhone/iPod docking stations, $19.99 rampage boots, a free digital video camera with any $65 fragrance purchase (while supplies last) and $79.99 for a DKNY down coat.

Meanwhile, in addition to opening its doors at midnight, Target is extending store hours throughout the season.

On Nov. 25, Target stores will be open from midnight to 11 p.m., and on Christmas eve, stores will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. or 8 p.m., depending on location.
