Jennifer Lopez Covers Up to Play a Realtor

Celebrity watchers
are giving Jennifer Lopez a hard time over her role as a real-estate-agent-turned-thief in the movie she is now filming, "Parker." Shockingly, the wardrobe lords decided to have her dress the part -- loose-fitting pencil skirts and tailored shirts -- instead of having her dress like J-Lo. Score one for authenticity.

Truth is, a lot of real estate agents -- at least those in Los Angeles and New York -- do their darnedest to look like JLo when she isn't dressing like them. Tight-fitting clothes and stiletto heels are probably more the norm than the exception for agents working in Hollywood -- the city, not the industry.

Just ask Valerie Fitzgerald, the Coldwell Banker Beverly Hills agent who is one of the stars of HGTV's new "Selling L.A." show. When she's not on TV, she's busy earning her title as one of the city's top-producing agents.

"My clients expect total professionalism . . . When you're representing and closing multimillion dollar listings, it's important to exude a high-caliber dress code," Fitzgerald says. She hastens to add that a sharp wardrobe will only get you so far. "I've never known a pair of stilettos that closed a deal," Fitzgerald says. "It's what's in your head, not on your feet, that matters."

J-Lo's nod to professional attire on screen (that's her, at right, on the set last week) is no doubt appreciated by the rank-and-file realty world. She may even displace "American Beauty's" Annette Bening as the most realistically dressed Realtor on the large screen. The agents in "Open House" were probably appropriately dressed as well, but we admit to being too scared to look.

Then of course there was the loosened-tie look worn by the stressed-out, pressure-cooked agents of "Glengarry Glen Ross." While being a real estate agent today certainly isn't without pressure, the look -- if our TV is to be believed -- has been replaced by the more casual attire of "Modern Family's" Phil Dunphy -- whom we all know hasn't sold a house in a couple of seasons and clearly spends more time on the couch talking to the camera than he does in the office talking to clients. Maybe he needs to partner up with J-Lo for a listing or two, because even in a pedestrian skirt suit, she looks pretty good.
